Queen Mary’s University of London
Queen Mary University of London is a leading research-intensive university which dates back to 1785, its four founding institutions were established to provide “hope and opportunity” to under-represented members of society.
Today, the university is respected around the world and is without doubt one of the most diverse higher education institutions, with over 65 percent of students coming from BAME (Black, Asian, and minority ethnic) backgrounds.
Kawneer aluminium window elements and Schueco curtain wall were installed to create the new façade, which still maintained a throwback to the concrete columns used on the original building. This was achieved by using very tall vertical curtain walling panels, with smaller horizontal panels, whilst at the same time lining through the windows to achieve a modern-looking building with clean lines.

The large curtain walling panels provided their own challenges in being installed, not only due to the size of the panels, but also the logistics in securing these panels in place whilst operating in a live university environment. Due to the nature of the projects undertaken at the university, disruption had to be kept to an absolute minimum and this included any vibrational influence to the neighbouring buildings.
FCS Facades Limited’s team are well-versed and experienced in working with education schemes and this was crucial in our overall performance working in a live environment, and delivering a façade finish to the highest levels for safety, functionality and robust performance.
