North Wharf Gardens
This ambitious hotel and mixed-use development in the Paddington Basin has delivered an iconic energy efficient building with striking facades, whilst cleverly combining both art and technology.
The construction included 2 hotels, a 373-bed Premier Inn alongside that of a 249-bed Staycity Aparthotel, a 450-person. conference centre, restaurants, bars, and a gymnasium, in addition to an adjacent 2 class primary school.
The substructure consisted of a reinforced concrete framework with over 13,000 m² of highly insulated lightweight steel framing, before being completed by a range of cladding. The system was able to achieve U Values as low as 0.12W/m2K in some areas and was designed to the BREEAM excellent rating.
Design was at the very heart of this 20-storey scheme from the onset. The façade is designed to include three different types of materials. Firstly, a combination of Moleanos and Ataija Azul Limestone with Black Granite rainscreen plinths.

Aluclad aluminium perforated and cassette rainscreen cladding, limestone and basalt cladding,

In addition to the inclusion of Corium glazed brick slips in 5 colours which were used at low levels and bespoke high-level segmented areas, they also provided a vertical drop on the building façade. The Aluclad aluminium perforated and cassette rainscreen cladding system including the golden eyebrow feature, changes the profile of the building incredibly and really makes this landmark stand out in a surrounding area of modern design.
Large-scale schemes like this need not only precision planning from the start, but also faultless execution, something which FCS Facades Limited pride themselves on. Add a unique sprawling artist tree design, included by the architect to cover 7 storeys of balconies, then the precision becomes critical. Over 300 unique Aluclad aluminium mosaic cladding panels were installed to re-create perfectly the artist’s design and bring it to life.
